2004's Renaissance of Wedding Fashion: Designer Junko Yoshioka Leads the Pack

August 21, 2004 -- Couture bridal and evening dress designer Junko Yoshioka of Bonaparte-NY has set in motion the evolution of bridal design. Since 1499, when Anne of Brittany first wore white to wed Louis XII of France, relatively little has changed in bridal design, especially when considering over 500 years has past! Yoshioka made her splash in the New York bridal scene nearly three years ago with her organic approach to bridal design—borrowed from her many years as a designer for pręt-a-porter firms such as MaxMara and AntePrima. She infuses modern concepts with the traditional to create a dress suitable for today's modern bride.

Her first innovation was the "detachable train," a design that features two silhouettes, usually a sexy sheath or mermaid style that can transform into a more traditional A-line, allowing the bride to incorporate two different looks into one day. She has also been known to incorporate fabrics like hand-cut leather and hand-spun lamb's wool into her designs. More recently she has introduced colors such as pinks, reds and blacks, as new alternatives to the traditional, monochromatic palette of whites.

Junko's designs stay fresh because they never follow trends, but rather begin with inspiration—nature, culture, and history have been among her many muses. And when asked how she feels about other designers borrowing from her concepts, Junko is unfazed, "When other designers start becoming comfortable with change, adding new creative elements to their designs, the more creative I am forced to be, and the stronger my designs become." The evolution has just begun.

Bonaparte-NY by Junko Yoshioka is a couture bridal and evening dress firm based in New York City. Designs are carried at select specialty boutiques nationwide.
