"TREASURED MOMENTS: THE TRADITION, JOY AND BEAUTY OF WEDDINGS" COSTUME EXHIBIT
TO OPEN ON JUNE 21, 2003 AT HISTORIC COSTUME GALLERY
May 20, 2003 Monterey, CA – Step back in time at the free new exhibit at Monterey History and Art Association's Perry Downer Historic Costume Gallery, "Treasured Moments: The Tradition, Joy and Beauty of Weddings." This special exhibit, that opens on Saturday, June 21 and runs through Saturday, September 20, 2003, will explore historic wedding traditions. It will feature gorgeous wedding outfits from 1853 to 1955, including wedding gowns, mens' formal wedding suits, bridesmaids, flower girls' dresses, ring bearers' attire, as well as "Mother of the Bride" outfits.
View the fascinating wedding traditions of our past at this unique exhibit. Also displayed in the exhibit will be "colored" wedding dresses, as the color white was not always traditional for this period. In addition, there will be trousseau necessities and accessories, as well as photographs and graphic representations of wedding customs from many different periods. Since this historic wedding-themed exhibit takes place during the traditional "wedding season," and the adjacent Carriage House is available for small weddings and receptions, arrangements can be made for guests who are attending a wedding at the Carriage House to also view the "Treasured Moments" wedding exhibit.
The Perry Downer Historic Costume Gallery is located on 201 Van Buren Street in Monterey and houses thousands of historic items of clothing that have represent Monterey's history. The show is open to the public on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00. Entrance is free.
According to Bill Stone, MHAA Board Member and Chairman of the Perry Downer Costume Gallery, "Wedding gowns and accessories are an excellent way of showing cultural changes in a community or culture. Because they are usually worn only once, the Costume Gallery will have excellent examples of a variety of wedding gowns and appropriate attire for attendants. The Monterey History and Art Association, which operates the Perry Downer Historic Costume Gallery, is the oldest cultural institution on the Monterey Peninsula. It began its work in 1931, and is still going strong today as a leader in the historic preservation of Monterey's artifacts, historic properties, and the precious art created by many of our most famous residents.
